Irvine, CA – April 25, 2022 – CapsoVision Inc., a medical camera capsule innovator, plans to deploy OptiPro Manufacturing integrated with Business One to prepare for rapid growth from sales of its first product, which provides a 360-degree view of a person’s gastrointestinal system.
“We are the fastest growing capsule camera company, growing 60 percent annually.” – Johnny Wang, President, CapsoVision Inc.
Based in Saratoga, CA, CapsoVision’s first FDA-approved product, the CapsoCam Plus®, is a vitamin-sized digestible capsule containing miniature cameras that photograph the small bowel, providing a 360° panoramic lateral view.
All of the diagnostic data – thousands of images – are stored onboard the CapsoCam Plus. It offers a more comprehensive imaging solution than end-facing cameras and its wire-free design provides unparalleled comfort and convenience to patients, who simply retrieve the capsule and return it to their physician. CapsoCam Plus received FDA approval in the U.S. in 2016, in Europe and Japan previously, and last year won approval in China.
“CapsoVision is developing similar medical capsules to detect colon cancer, esophagus cancer, and stomach cancer, among others,” said Johnny Wang, President. “We are developing a colon capsule to replace the colonoscopy for people who don’t want that invasive procedure,” he said. “Patients can take the capsule at home; they don’t need to go to the hospital.”
CapsoVision manufactures its capsules in Taiwan and its final assembly, software development, implementation, packaging, and warehouse functions are in Saratoga, CA. The company employs 60. Revenues last year were more than $6 million, according to Wang.
Lacked Compliance and Financial Efficiencies
The startup launched using QuickBooks, then deployed Epicor, and finally used Expandable to take advantage of its perceived inventory management capabilities.
But executives soon learned Expandable lacked the financial capabilities they needed. “We had to export data to generate financial reports and we needed a third software system for document management,” said Vivian Tsai, Accounting Manager.
“We heard Expandable had full inventory management functionality, but when I joined the company, I found the system lacked financial efficiency in the system,” said Tsai. “There was no real-time posting so we could only find results after month’s end closing.”
The legacy ERP only offered a manual approval process, which made it impossible to work remotely during the pandemic. “We had problems with real-time posting, sometimes the system didn’t work and sometimes the databases didn’t work,” she added.
NetSuite Too Expensive
CapsoVision evaluated several ERPs including SAP and Oracle NetSuite, which were too expensive Tsai said. Vision 33, a reseller of SAP Business One, an ERP for small to midsize businesses, introduced the product to CapsoVision. A representative from OptiPro Manufacturing let Tsai know that its product was natively embedded on SAP Business One and that its manufacturing platform provides the document management needed by biotechnology and medical device manufacturers.
OptiPro Manufacturing Satisfies Medical Compliance Needs
“OptiPro Manufacturing with SAP Business One provides strong financial acumen, inventory management, and meets the compliance needs of fast-growing medical device and biotechnology firms.” – Vivian Tsai
“We need FDA and CFR 21 validation and we need to fulfill quality control requirements, which were our main decision points to choose OptiPro Manufacturing integrated with Business One; they fill our requirements,” she said.
With OptiPro Manufacturing, CapsoVision will replace three software packages: Expendable, its reporting software, and its document management software.
Once implemented, Tsai looks forward to improved cost accounting to more accurately reflect actual manufacturing costs, better inventory controls, and greatly reduce the manual entries made throughout the company.
“With OptiPro Manufacturing and SAP Business One, we’ll gain the efficiencies needed to help us grow to become the market leader in the small bowel capsule market and enter new diagnostic markets once we gain additional FDA approvals.” – Johnny Wang
